PDE-based surface reconstruction in automotive styling design

Abstract Surface reconstruction is an important part in automotive styling design. Existing methods mainly rely on the proficiency of digital modelers who manually modify surface shape to approximate scanned data. Apart from manual modifications, reconstructed surfaces cannot well reflect design intent designers since feature curves clay models have not been preserved accurately. In this paper, we propose a partial differential equation (PDE) based method analytically generate optimal with C n continuity under constraint curves. The proposed accurately preserves and achieves automatic Class-A without time-consuming work. effectiveness demonstrated by number experiments that reconstruct main parts exteriors.
